Why Didn’t I Start Sooner

I ran across an old picture of myself. In the picture, I was 26 years old. Today I am 41. That gives you an idea of how many years ago this was. But when I saw the picture, I thought to myself, why did I not start losing weight sooner? I came up with a few answers.

The first was I was severely self deceived and a bit delusional. What I mean by that is I really did not think I was I fat as I actually was. In my mind, wile I was not completely happy with the way I looked, I still did not think I looked that bad. After all there were people much fatter than I.

In conjunction with my delusion, I also made excuses. While I  hated looking at pictures of myself, I would think, well the camera adds 10 pounds. I know I was making excuses and delusional because I do not mind looking at pictures of myself now. In fact, I’m a little vain about it.

Another reason, and probably the biggest reason is that I did not really want to lose the weight. Or to put it another way, I did not want to give up those things that were making me fat. Of course, if someone was able to wave a magic wand over me and make me thin, I would not object. But I did not want to give up all that high-carb food!

These issues were not unique to me. They are common to all sorts of people who need to lose weight, and I hear them quite often. I run into people all the time who say things like, “I only have a few pounds to lose,” when they actually have 50 to 100. Self deception and excuse making at work.

I hear people all the time say things like, “I only eat bread at lunch.” This is an indication that they really do not want to give up those things that are keeping them fat.

In order for people to lose weight, they must give up the delusions, stop making excuse, and love being healthy more than they love bad food. I know that it can be difficult because I did it. I only wish I would have done it sooner!

Low Carb Goodness!

Low carb eating in our house is often exciting and fun! This was a dish my wife and step daughter made. It is a cheese burger with a low-carb bun and a side of cauliflower salad.

The actual burger has been cut in the center to make room for an egg.

The bun was  made from a mixture of eggs, almond flour, and flax-seed flour.

The cauliflower salad was a heated dish which included cheese and bacon! Two favorites in my house. In my opinion, this tastes way better than any potato salad.

This was truly an amazing meal and ever so satisfying. So my question for the readers is: What is your favorite low-carb meal? Please share in the comments below.

Too Many Low-Carb Foods!

Have you hit a plateau in your weight-loss journey? If you have not yet, you will. I don’t say this to be negative. It is just that we all hit these walls while we are trying to shed those pounds. But if you have hit that wall, you do not want to quit. Instead, it is best to get to the bottom of the problem and find out what you need to do to get your metabolism burning again.

Possible Cause

As a health and motivation coach, I have seen many reasons why people stop losing weight. One of the most common is too much of a good thing. What I mean by that is too much low-carb food.

Going low-carb is great and there are all sorts of great low-carb recipes. In addition, there are all sorts of recipes to turn your favorite high-carb foods into low-carbohydrate dishes. But what people sometimes overlook is that low-carb food is not no-carb food.

Recently, I was consulting with a client that had stopped losing weight. When I asked him about his diet, I learned that he was regularly consuming low-carb spaghetti. The carb count was around five per serving. However, he was eating about four to six servings per meal. In addition, he was also eating many servings of his favorite low-carb desserts!

Of course the reader can see the problem. Those carbs can add up. And eating too much low-carb foods will spike ones blood sugar leading to the resale of insulin resulting in the storage of fat.

If you have stopped losing weight, it may be the result of too much low-carbohydrate food. Be aware of how many carbs you are consuming and remember–low-carb is not no-carb. planking2 001 Snack 006

Pretend to be Robb Wolf (Kick Your Sub-Conscious Into Gear).

Much of what it takes to be successful in weight loss is in your mind. Often we know what to do but lack the mental strength to do so. That’s why developing mental strength is such a vital part of achieving your weight-loss goals.

Of course there are many ways to do this. Today I would like to share with you just one.

The exercise is simple. First pick a roll model. Some one who has the body you would like to have. You must pick someone! That is part of the process.

Next, pretend to be that person for fifteen minutes. That’s right. Don’t just look up to them. Pretend to be them. Make it vivid in your imagination. Imagine you are looking out of that persons eyes. Sit the way they you would imagine them to be sitting. Walk the way you imagine they walk.

One of the best times to do this is at meal time or while you are working out. Imagine you are them and eat the way you think they would eat. Or workout the way you think they would workout.

Why Would You Want to do This?

A big reason people make bad decisions with their health is a result of their sub-conscious mind. Your sub-conscious is like a program that is playing all the time. It is the reason people yo-yo diet. Your sub-conscious mind is drawing you back to old habits continually. Unless you address your sub-conscious you will not make a permanent change.

This exercise helps re-write the program that your sub-conscious mind is running. You are integrating the imagined….. well, I don’t want to bore you with all the details. Just do it!

Try doing the exercise for fifteen minutes at first. Then go longer if you can. The longer you do this, and the more often, the more permanent the change will be. Kick your sub-conscious into gear.

Between You and Your Weight Loss Goals

plakingme 020

Standing between you and your weight loss goals is one thing–the story you tell yourself about why you cannot reach them. If you change the story, you change your out come.

The Stores We Tell Ourselves

Back when I was struggling with my weight, I would tell myself things like, “You are never going to make it. You have tried so many times before and failed.” And, “I simply have a weakness for bad food. I cannot help myself.”

I have heard the same story from others along with things  such as, “I’m genetically deposed to be fat.” And, “I have a slow metabolism.”

As long as people have these kinds stories running though their minds, they will never lose weight.

Write a New Story

Overcoming the stories we tell ourselves is not difficult. In fact, it is as simple as writing a new story.

One of new stories that I tell myself is, “The past does not equal the future.” This helped me tremendously. I had failed to lose wight over and over again in my life. Two years ago, when I had finally had enough, when I finally decided to get rid of my excess fat, the nagging voice in my head was saying, “This is just going to be another failure. After all, you have always failed before.”

But I decided not to listen to that story and instead tell myself, “The past does not equal the future.” It did not matter how many times I had failed in the past, I did not have to fail in the future. Now that I have re-written my story, my future looks brighter than ever.

Another story I use to tell myself is,”I am too weak to say no to bad food.” For example, I would start a diet and in just a few days a friend would call me and want to take me to lunch. This would lead to failure as I would often chose to indulge in a high-carbohydrate item. Of course afterwards I would feel guilty and say to myself, “I am too weak to say no to bad food.”

Now I tell myself, “I am in charge of what I put in my mouth.” When I go out with friends these days, I always chose the low-carb option unless I have special plans.

Of course there are many other negative stories that I use to tell myself that have now been replaced with positive ones. But what about you? What negative stories are you telling yourself now? And what stories will you have to tell yourself to make a positive change? Let us know in the comment section.

Update

lecture1 002

Hey everyone. I just wanted to let you know what has been going on lately. Here is the scoop. As many of you can tell, we have updated the site. We upgraded this sight from a free blog to an actual web sight. My hope is that this will bring more of a professional look to this new business.

Also, I (Ean) am working on a small booklet which will cover the first six weeks of the diet/lifestyle we promote here at Advanced Weight Loss. This will be a digital download that will be available for a very low price.

In addition, I will be starting a pod-cast shortly called: A Mind For Fitness. My hope is that the pod-cast will be up and running within the month.

Finally, I want to thank everyone for following this blog. It really means a lot to us here.

Success Questions for Weight Loss

Many times the reason we fail at our weight-loss goals has to do with the questions we ask ourselves. For example, many people ask themselves a question like: Why can’t I lose weight? Our brain is like a computer. If we ask it a question it will search for the answer. So if we ask a question like the one above, we will come up with the answer. It will be something like: Because you fail at everything so you fail at your diet too. Your brain must find the answer to the questions you ask even if the answer is untrue.

On the other hand, if we ask the right set of questions our brains will also come up with the answers. Below are three questions that will help you reach your weight loss goals.

What Do You Want?

The key to this question is to answer in the positive. Too often people will answer what they want in negative terms. For example someone might say, “I don’t want to be fat.” But what does not being fat mean? To compel yourself toward your goals, answer this question in the positive.

Personally speaking, I would answer this question this way, “I want to weigh 220.” By saying what I do want instead of what I do not want I now know that I need to lose about six more pounds. Putting your answer in the positive gives you a better mental attitude.

What Is the First or Next Step?

If you are just starting out, you may want to ask yourself what is the first step. However, if you have been on the weight-loss wagon for sometime, you might ask yourself what is the next step.

Another key here is to be specific. What precisely do you need to do in order to take that next or first step?

I’m in the “next step” camp. So for me to lose six more pounds, I will either need to workout more or adjust my eating habits in some way. But more specifically, I could say something like, “I need to increase my workouts by twenty minutes,” or “I need to experiment with my cheat days.”

How Can You Take This Step and Enjoy the Process?

Remember, your brain will find an answer to what you ask. For example, I need to increase my exercise by twenty minutes a day. But now I’m asking the question: How can I enjoy that process? My brain is already coming up with answers. I could take a walk with my dogs. I could add an extra Martial Arts workout to my day. I love Martial Arts. The list could go on. Now my next step is fun and not something I have to do to lose six more pounds.

In closing, I would encouraging you to ask yourself these questions. It’s exciting to see exactly what you want, what you need to get it, and how to make getting it fun!

Getting Past Your Plateaus (Making Your Diet Work)

In a past article, I mentioned that I have hit many Plateaus during my weight loss journey.  I would like to take the time and share with you precisely what I did in order to beat everyone of those plateaus. I do this in the hopes that this will help you get past your weight-loss plateau as well.

First off I must admit that this is extremely autobiographical. In other words, these are the things did. This is to say that these things may or may not work for you.

I started my weight-loss journey at around 286 pounds. I probably weighed more but I cannot be sure. The first wall I hit was 250 pounds. Honestly, I was still feeling pretty good at this time, but I noticed that the weight was not coming off like it was when I first started. However, because I was still feeling good, I did not quit my diet nor my workout scheduled. And that is the first thing I did to get past my weight-loss wall. I kept going!

After this, I lost 8 more pounds. Now I was down to 242ish and I hit another wall. This one was severe. My weight loss did not just slow down, it stopped altogether! I was very upset. I was still dieting and working out, but the scale was not moving at all! What I had done to lose weight so far was now no longer working for me. I do not remember how long this phase lasted, but I’m going to guess that it was a few mounts.

So what did I do to get past this wall? Well, basically I increased my workouts. I did not do this on purpose. What happened is I was hired on to a second job. Both my jobs at that time required that I was on me feet all day. But my new job was much more labor intensive. In addition to this, I was still doing my regular workouts and I stuck to my diet plan. Within just a few weeks, I lost another 10 pounds.

So I was at 232 and I hit another wall. It was just as bad as the last one. The scale was not moving even though I was exercising like crazy and maintaining a low-carbohydrate diet.

It was at this point I started learning more about dieting and exercise. I started learning about how and why the belly fat is so hard to lose. I learned that belly fat is more like an organ, and one thing it does is store toxins.

One of the people who I look up to recommended that people who are having a hard time getting rid of those last few pounds switch from regular Diet Coke to Diet Coke with splenda. The sweetener in regular Diet Coke is a toxin, and I was ingesting that toxin by the gallons. So I switched. And guess what? It worked! I got down to about 225-227. That is a total loss of 60 pounds off my original weight.

In closing, I have one more way way of getting past this very last wall that I have hit. However, I will share that with you when I reach my goal weight of 220!
