Fit Mind Fat Mind

One of the things that astonishes me about my transformation from being fat to being fit is the way I now think. Not only did I go though a physical metamorphosis but I also whent though a mental one as well. Here are two topics contrasting the way I thought as a fat person to how I now think as a fit person.

Thinking About My Next Meal

As an overweight person, I use to worry about food particularly about my next meal. I was like a junkie worrying about his next fix. Part of the problem is that a lot of my happiness came from food.

Another aspect of the problem is that I was always hungry. Eating processed food that are also high in carbohydrates will raise and lower your blood sugar rapidly leaving you hungry more often. So of course I was always thinking about my next meal.

I’m still a foodie. I love to eat and enjoy most of my meals. However, I generally do not think about food until I’m hungry.

Also, I do not look to food as a primary source of happiness. That is to say, I do not look to food as a way to change my state or comfort me when I’m feeling sad. Now I much more look to exercise and other resources to change my state.

Worrying About “Wasting” Food

When I was overweight I was constantly concerned about finishing my plate. I viewed throwing food away even if I was full as a waste. So instead I would stuff myself.

I grew up hearing about starving children in China who would love eat what I threw away. Feeding the poor is a serious matter and I’m not trying to make light of it in any way. However, me overeating does not do one thing to help starving children. It only makes me fat.

I no longer worry about wasting food. This is not to say that I frivolously make extra food just to throw it away. In fact, I generally eat most of what is on my plate. But I do not try to stuff myself if I’m full.

The reason I no longer worry about throwing away excess food is that I had somewhat of an epiphany a few years ago. I realized that if you are overweight, then I am wasting food if I eat past satiety. It is not going to use; It is going to fat. So I decided that I could either throw excess food in the trash can I wear (fat cells), or I could through it in the trash can I don’t wear.

Final Thoughts

Changing your thinking is sometimes more difficult than changing your habits. But the truth is all change starts in the mind. Today challenge yourself to think like a fit person. If you do, you will eventually act like a fit person.

One Big Mistake That Will Ruin Your New Years Resolution to Get in Shape

As a health coach, I see a lot of people who want to get in shape for the new year. It’s natural. It’s a new year filled with new promises and new possibilities. It seems like nothing is impossible.

There is a lot of truth in that last statement–nothing seems impossible! But wait. Haven’t you been here before? Haven’t we all? I remember telling myself every January 1st. that this year would be the year I finally got in shape. But by the following December, I found myself in the same if not worse shape than when I started. So what’s gone wrong and how can we fix it?

The truth is that it is not just one thing but a bunch of small things that that add up to failure. However, if there is one encapsulating issue that if addressed would solve most problems, it would be this: No plan!

No Plan

Instead of having a plan people say things like, “I’m just going to try harder,” or “I’m going to be more healthy,” and “I just need to lose a few pounds.”

The problem with this is that it is too vague. In what ways are you going to try harder? What does “more healthy” mean? And how much weight do you actually need to lose? The truth is without a specific plan you are more than likely going to find yourself in the same place by next year.

The plan you choose should be specific and should cover an eating protocol, a workout protocol, and psychological conditioning. You want to keep as motivated as possible on all levels of fitness. This includes what you eat, how you move your body, and your state of mind.

Realistic

Your plan should be realistic. It should include a time when you can eat your favorite foods, and a time off of exercising for rest.

It should also include more than one way to track your weight-loss progress. For example, the scale is a great way to see how much you have lost but this should not be your only means of measuring your success. Another way is by having a goal shirt or dress that you want to fit into. Often you may not be making progress on the scale but you may be fitting better into your clothes.

My 30 Day Weight Loss Journey 8/17/16

Unfortunately I have bad news on two major issues. First off the scale is up a pound and a half. I weighed in at 207.5 today. But I did have a lot of sugar last night so it was to be expected.

Another problem was that I did not get to run today. I got kicked in the leg last night in class. I really did not think much of it when it happened. And it really did not hurt that much until I tried running this morning. Instead I lifted weights. I did a chest and bicep workout.

Later today, I went back to the gym and tried to run again. Still could not do it. I decided to get in the pool for a while and let my leg rest. I really hope I can run tomorrow. I’m thinking of taking on another mile.

For food today I fasted for about twenty hours. Then I had a feast of salad and meat. Here are the picks. 13934626_863193037115345_1306704565697271081_n 14040178_863192923782023_5512589560622569359_n 14045972_863192920448690_5824429766755926337_n 14051566_863193067115342_733897499473887431_n14079897_863193043782011_3631511768819521843_n

So that is all for today. Hope things go better tomorrow.

Daily Weight Loss Update: More Success 8/10/16!!!

Awesome day. It was my second day in a row that I weighed in at 208. So excited. Let’s hope I will see the same or a better number tomorrow.

So instead of listing out the food and then the workout, I thought what I would do is walk you though the last 24 hours and cover both.

Last 24 Hours

It started last night. I was still very hungry so I ate one more half bowl of chili and one more brownie. However, I did not stuff myself. I was just barely satisfied.

I got up this morning at 6 AM and ran my 4 miles. It was not my best time. It took me 41:20 min. There was some walking. Currently I am doing my best to run 3 miles before taking a short break and running the rest of my last mile. I have done this two days in a row. But today; however, I did not make it. I ran about 2 and quarter mile before I needed a break. Then I walked and ran the last mile and three quarters.

After a 17 hour fast, I went to an all-you-can-eat restaurant. The pictures below are self explanatory.  13894993_858652864236029_8118175170029576314_n  13920942_858652840902698_8830812832899460667_n 13920953_858652834236032_3503618795379522144_n13939570_858652877569361_6884908293654261642_n

All pretty much low carb. Lots of meat and veggies. However, even though I ate what looks like a significant amount of food, I was still hungry.

Later I went back to the gym and worked on shoulders and back. It was about a half hour workout. Then it was off to Jujitsu for an hour and a half. Awesome class, built up a great sweat. Very exhausting!

Got home and had about a half bowl of turkey stew. It was thickened with cream and rice something or other. No gluten; very low carb.

Dessert was one organic peanut butter-dark-chocolate cup.

A few things in closing. I’m not sure if I’m getting enough food. I know it looks like a lot but I am also working out like crazy and fasting. The reason I say this is that I am still very hungry. Tomorrow is a big workout day. Running, weights, Yoga, Martial Arts. If I meet all my workout goals, and my weight is still in check, I plan on eating a bit more.

We will see you all tomorrow!

Daily Weight Loss Update 8/7/2016

Here is what I ate today:

After a 22 hour fast I went to an all-you-can-eat restaurant.

First I had a big taco salad. No chips, just salad, sour cream, chicken, cheese, and a few other things. Then it was onto veggies and bacon and eggs. Last I made another taco salad, but I used beef this time. However, I only had a few bites and did not finish it.

Eight hours later I had dinner. Just some zucchini, cheese, and meat. A very small plate of it.

Here is my workout:

Ran 4 miles this morning. Then 1 hour Yoga class. Later in the evening I taught JKD for about 2 hours. Then I went to my Jujitsu class for about 1 and a half hours.

Trying to Lose Those Last 10 Pounds

It’s truth time everyone. This is a picture of me in a skin-tight t-shirt. 13906585_857226264378689_7626450040160353722_n

I took this picture yesterday, I have just turned 43. I’m disappointed in some respects because I have not hit my goal weight yet. While I am down a good 90 pounds from where I was, I still need to lose 10 to 15 more pounds. Currently I weigh 211. I weighed just this morning. My personal best weight was 209. I’d like to get down to 199–below 200 if that is possible.

So what am I going to do about it? My resolve is to try to lose this weight in the next 30 days. I will be posting everyday and being accountable to you my readers. I will be posting the following things:

  1. My daily weight.
  2. What I ate and when.
  3. My daily workouts.

So a few words before I start this experiment. First off I want to talk about my diet. I pretty much follow the Warrior Diet. I fast daily between 19 to 24 hours. Also, while my carb count is lower than the standard American diet, I do have a few more carbs than a strict low-carb diet. This is due to the fact that I work-out a ton and I do have some blood-sugar issues. However, I am going to be dialing back how much I eat and the amount of carbs i eat. I will be uploading the pictures of the food I eat along with a description so I cannot lie to myself about it. Truth be told, I have too many cheat meals and I want to stop. Along with that, I do plan on having a free night once a week. But it will be scheduled and it will be my ONLY cheat night.

Let’s address the workouts. I normally run about 4 miles 3 times a week. I also do Yoga, Martial Arts, and Weights along with other activities. But I’m going to be bumping a few things up. I’m going to attempt to run 4 miles 5 days a week. I also will be bumping up my weight lifting. The Martial Arts and Yoga probably will not change that much. But I will be posting what I did along with pictures so you can judge for yourself.

So please help me by reading and sharing this blog, and also leaving me any comments. Thanks

Eian.
